Recent Events in the Department of Chemistry
Kimberly Fessel's summer in Germany as a RISE Professional Intern
Kim Fessel (Professional Chemistry; 2007) spent the summer of 2007 in Frankfurt, Germany working in the area of Surface Treatment Chemistry at Chemetall GmbH. She has put together a report of her experience which can be found on the Rise Professional website.
Organic Chemistry Lab Atrazine Special Project
Dr. Don Batema and his Organic Chemistry Lab (Section 04) recently studied the presence of atrazine, a herbicide, in the Heim Road Wetland complex near Evansville. They used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy techniques. They were able to measure atrazine at the parts per billion level in the wetland. You can read more about this project in the Spring 2007 Newsletter.
New Environmental Study Site
Vectren Corporation donated 1100 acres of land along the Wabash River, just north of Griffin, IN in Gibson County, to serve as an outdoor learning environment for students in Environmental Studies, Biology, and Chemistry. The land has been named Vectren Conservation Park, University of Evansville Environmental Research Lab. Students, under the direction of Prof. Cris Hochwender, have already begun surveying the plant diversity on the land and will soon begin restoring parts of the site to native wetland meadow.
Dr. Kristy Miller Receives Merck Grant
Dr. Miller authored a grant funded by the Merck Institue for Science Education and the American Association for the Advancement of Science Undergraduate Research Program. $60,000 was awarded to support collaborative student research in the Biology and Chemistry Departments. This summer, the research of six students is funded through this grant.
