  • The Spring 2009 Edition of the Chemistry Newsletter is now ready for download.

  • Robert Plane, Class of 1948, given the 2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award. Robert Plane graduated from Evansville with a chemistry major in 1948. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1951. After working one year at Oak Ridge National Labs, he moved to the Chemistry Department at Cornell University where he became full professor in 1961. He chaired the Department from 1967-69 and served as Provost of Cornell University from 1969-73. Professor Plane left Cornell to serve as President of Clarkson College from 1974-85. He also served as President of Wells College from 1991-95. He co-authored the textbook Chemistry, the most widely used general chemistry textbook in the world. In 1985 he became a part-time winemaker and established Plane's Cayuga Winery on Cayuga Lake in Upstate New York.
